Electric Space Heating : Lot 20

Lot 20 is part of the EED (2015/1188) EU Directive and comes into force in January 2018.

The standard states that all local space heaters manufactured for sale after the 1st January 2018 that use electric or gaseous liquid fuel must comply with a minimum efficiency standard.

This includes:

  • Electric radiators
  • Electric underfloor heating
  • Electric heaters
  • Gas fires

Local space heating products are defined as appliances that provide heat to indoor spaces by generating heat in the location which they are situated.

The aim of this new standard is to reduce carbon emissions by reducing energy used in our homes.

For UK Wholesalers;

You should ensure the product available for sale were either a) manufactured before 1st January 2018 or b) compliant with the new regulations or both. This means any stock in your warehouse at the end of this year can still be made available for sale and the same applies in manufacturer warehouses, even if delivered after the deadline. Anything manufactured after 1st January 2018 must comply.

How to ensure Compliance

Lot 20 requires that consumption and emissions for local space heaters must be reduced by applying existing, non proprietry technologies without an increase in the combined costs of purchasing and operating the product.

This means driving efficiency of local space heaters by regulating their operation through the use of intelligent timers and controls.

From 1st January 2018, Electric heaters, electric radiators, electric floor heating and electric & gas fires must be supplied with an integrated intelligent thermostat, in order to comply with the Lot 20 efficiency standard.
